Fiona Mulvey
My name is Fiona Mulvey and I started getting some help with my reading and writing when I started a skillseekers course. I was finding some parts of it hard, for example filling in application forms so my training officer Linda suggested I go along for some classes.
The classes I went to were for six weeks and were normally held on Tuesday afternoons so I was able to go during my work time. We did things like spelling and grammar and if I was doing something at work I found hard, I would it along to the course and my tutor Dorothy helped me.
For the first couple of weeks I was quite shy as I was in a group of eight people, but you get to know people quite quickly. It was nice being able to meet other people who had the same problems. It was also good being able to give my boss feedback on what I had been doing. My training officer, boss and other colleagues all found that my work was improving, so I was quite pleased. I still go along on a monthly basis and if any new learners say they are nervous I just say I was just like you, and I was nervous to begin with but I got used to it, you pick it up quick quickly and it does help you at work.
I was even presented for an award for my learning at a ceremony in the City Chambers. All my family came along and I felt really proud.
