Learners' Stories
Philip's Story — 11 Sep 2009
Philip was referred by the Breaking Down Barriers Project in Drumchapel because he had been long-term unemployed and suffered from illness for over 25 years. Philip attended learning at the Glasgow Volunteer Centre to improve his reading, writing, spelling and use of numbers. He also wanted to be able to fill in forms and create a CV.
Since attending his learning, Philip has volunteered as a gardener and then at the Milton Cat and Dog Home. He also won an award for completion of the Costa Coffee 6 book challenge even though had never read a book before this. Philip has moved into paid employment and was nominated by his Volunteer Centre tutors for a national learning award. He recently found out that he was selected as a finalist and was awarded a certificate of achievement by the Scottish Adult Learning Partnership during their Adult Learners' Week celebrations in 2009. The Volunteer Centre plans to hold a local ceremony to further honor Philip's achievements.
