John's Story — 11 Sep 2009

John* is a learner working with Culture and Sport Glasgow Community Learning at the Bridge in Easterhouse on Tuesdays.  John is on the Riddrie Centre Newsletter Group, which produces a newsletter to share information and stories with the disabled adults and their carers who attend the Centre.  The group visit different community organisations to interview staff, take photographs and write stories for the quarterly newsletter.  John became involved in the newsletter group two years ago to develop his writing and researching skills while contributing to his community.  John now reads with more confidence and carries a notepad with him at all times in case the opportunity for a "scoop" arises when he is out and about. 

Last year John visited Blindcraft to interview staff for a newsletter article and discovered that he was interested in the work of the project.  He was offered a work placement as the first step to gaining employment there.

John's next learning goal is to produce online and printed editions of the Riddrie Newsletter.
