Learners' Stories

Chow's Story — 11 Sep 2009

Chow* was born in China and came to Scotland three years ago. She is currently in her 6th year at a local secondary school. Chow was struggling with her exams at school and was afraid that her literacy issues would prevent her from getting a good education. She was referred onto ALN provision by her Pastoral Care Teacher at Shawlands Academy.  She has been attending one and half hour individual learning sessions once a week at the YCSA since January 2009.

Chow underwent an assessment and developed a learning plan with her tutor to help her improve her spelling, writing and her understanding of school work and exams.

Chow really enjoys the learning and has perfect attendance.  She is more confident and is an active participant in sessions.  Chow said, ‘The tutor has helped me to understand my school work better and I feel more confident about what to expect in the exams now.

I have not sat my exams yet, but I am doing lots of past papers at school and my marks have been getting better so I am very happy and not as scared about my exams as I was before!'
