Learners' Stories
Pablo's Story — 11 Sep 2009
Pablo has been working for Quarriers for a number of years. He accessed their confidential workplace literacy programme for ESOL literacies support because he lacked confidence and did not have the level of literacy required for his position. Pablo's colleagues and subordinates were unaware of his literacy issues because he took work home every night to get help from his partner putting additional strain on his relationship.
Pablo self referred to the Quarriers Richmond Workplace project after a literacy awareness raising and promotion event. After confidentiality was assured, Pablo agreed to take up learning. His literacy and language needs were assessed and Pablo also revealed his coping strategies which helped to conceal his literacy needs at work.
To ensure confidentiality, Pablo gets individual tuition which helps him to develop the literacy and English skills required for his position. For example, Pablo was required to write official correspondences and wanted to write with confidence and be assured that the tone was acceptable without seeking assistance from his partner. Pablo now feels more confident and has stopped taking work home at night. This has significantly enhanced the quality of his home life and relationship and improved his work.
