How do I become a tutor?

There are a whole host of volunteer opportunities to work as a tutor in Glasgow. Most learning providers don't require qualifications and are happy to offer training while you work as a tutor. Generally people will start tutoring as a volunteer tutor in a supported environment, in a one-to-one setting with an adult learner. To find out what local opportunities there are available, simply contact the learning providers in your local area. Search our database or visit the Glasgow Volunteer Centre.

Training

Although formal training is not always required, many people prefer to get some qualifications under their belt and there are a wide variety of opportunities across the city to help you on your way.

ITALL - The Introductory Training in Adult Literacies Learning (ITALL)

This is the basic entry-level training in adult literacies. Contact the Glasgow's Learning helpline on 0800 027 6402 for more information.

Meanwhile, a basic introductory training pack in ITALL is available online through the Adult Literacies Online website. It will not prepare tutors to work with a group on their own, unless they have other relevant experience or training but is seen as the first step towards it.

TQAL - Teaching Qualification in Adult Literacies

This new qualification for adult literacies tutors has been developed by a Scottish Consortium, led by Strathclyde University. The first module ‘Learning worlds' began in March 2007. There is a substantial online element as well as face to face delivery.Click on the link for more information about future courses
