My name's Gerry Green and I'm a sessional literacies tutor with Glasgow Women's Library.   I've been doing this kind of work for three and a half years.

Before working in Literacies I had always worked in an office and for many long years  had been very unhappy and bored with the jobs I found myself doing.   Being a tutor was not something I had ever pictured myself doing.  I had left school at 15 with no qualifications and thought I would be stuck for ever doing work I no longer enjoyed.  Until the day that I received a circular through the post, about some new training (called ITALL) that was being offered, by the Women's Library.  I thought it sounded very interesting, so I got myself on the course and have never looked back!!

I love the variety of what I do; working with ESOL learners, people with mental health issues, learning difficulties and people who have just missed out on schooling.   But one thing every learner has in common is that they are all very interesting people, people with strengths that they don't recognise and often don't value.  My job is to help them see how individual, clever and talented they really are!
