Jack Savage — 18 Apr 2007
My name is Jack Savage. I'm 47 and I work 10 hours a week as a tutor/development worker for Queen's Cross Housing Assoc. We have three sessions per week of two hours, the rest is spent trying to get learners through the door (by far the hardest part of the job). I've worked here for nearly three years. I also worked as a sessional tutor for the Gypsy/Traveller project in Maryhill before it lost its funding. Before that I worked for three years as a volunteer English tutor to Asylum Seekers in Sighthill.
I went back to study as a mature student and did a degree in Spanish, then got a qualification in Community Education.
I always wanted to work in informal education working with people the system had failed. Adult literacy is ideal. It's not without its problems and setbacks, but when things go well its rewarding.
