New Liberated Prisoners Post for Glasgow — 21 Nov 2007

Colin Scullion has recently been appointed as Adult Literacy and Numeracy Development Worker for Liberated Prisoners.

Based in the Glasgow College of Nautical Studies, Colin's role will involve contacting prisoners before they are liberated and linking with them into continues ALN study via community provision. He will have responsibility for making links with community organisations that provide ALN classes on behalf of liberated prisoners and developing learning pathways from prisons out into the community.

Colin said: Encouraging liberated prisoners to continue with their studies may help them move into courses provided by colleges, lead onto training, volunteering or employment, depending on the desires of the learner. Learners will have the opportunity to get involved in ALN to improve their standing within the community, help improve their personal life and also help enhance their family life."

The role wil involve developing links with prison staff and Link Centre staff as well as building links with college staff who work within the prison learning centres.

"Initially, the prisons within my remit will be Barlinnie, Corton Vale and Polmont, all of which send a large number of liberated prisoners back to Glasgow. However there is scope to extend this to other prisons who return prisoners to the Glasgow area. This post's objective is to enhace existing provision within prisons and provider prisoners with support into community organisations to stpp them from falling into a 'black hole' once they are liberated and to play a part in preventing re-offending."

Colin is keen for ALN organisations based in the community to email him with their details so he can build up a picture of groups that liberated prisoners can be signposted towards. Contact Colin on 0141 565 2670 or c.scullion@gcns.ac.uk
