Top marks for WEA Scotland Literacies Project — 22 Nov 2007

A workplace literacies project delivered in Glasgow by the Workers' Educational Association (WEA) Scotland has been praised in a new report published this week by HM Inspectorate of Education (HMIe).

The workplace literacies being delivered at The Wellbeing Initiative which is funded by the Glasgow ALN Initiative was one of many examples of good practice highlighted by the report following a recent inspection of the organisation's work across Scotland.

The report rated WEA Scotland 'very good' or above on all nine quality indicators and commended the organisation for its unique work developing and delivering adult education in the workplace and in the community. In particular, the report highlighted the fact that all WEA learners knew their learning goals and many went on to further education or employment.

It concluded that WEA Scotland is carrying out a vital role in leading and coordinating adult education work that benefits individuals and communities.

WEA Scottish Secretary Joyce Connon said: "We're thrilled to have our sector-leading work recognised independently.

"Our staff are dedicated and talented and the report also highlighted the strengths of involving members in devloping their own learning."
