River City and RaW join forces to highlight literacies — 21 Nov 2007
BBC Scotland's popular soap River City and BBC Scotland's Outreach and Learning team have joined forces to produce new episodes for mobiles and websites which highlight the BBC's national literacy campaign, RaW. It also promotes the RaW story writing competition which gives people the opportunity to write their own story based on the RaW Max and Lara books.
Six specially commissioned one minute films elaborate on the story of one of Rivery City's most popular characters, Scarlett Adams, as she struggles with the stigma and lack of confidence associated with poor literacy as she attempts to improve her reading and writing as her young daughter Madonna grows up.
The episodes were launched on Tuesday 6 November after each weekday episode of River City and can be viewed on the River City website or BBC RaW website. They can also be watched as a one-off trailer on mobiles by texting RIVER to 81010 or all six can be downloaded as they are released. Both websites will include information and links to The Big Plus campaign to ensure potential learners are given appropriate advice on provision in their local area.
